CHILDREN’S ASSESSMENT CENTER
Houston, TX
Big Picture
Project Color Corps partnered with the Houston office of architecture and design firm, Gensler to create a vibrant mural for the The Children’s Assessment Center (The CAC), one of the nation’s largest child abuse advocacy centers located in Houston’s Rice Village.
“This was a passion project for a very special client with a mission that really affects us all, especially in trying times like these. Our hope is every child who interacts with the mural or takes time to reflect on its design can take away an uplifting, encouraging message of hope, joy and empowerment.”

A Conversation About Color
As part of the project, Project Color Corps’ founder Laura Guido-Clark, taught the kids about color—specifically how colors can influence their feelings and how they see the world around them. When asked what shapes or motifs brought them comfort and joy, the themes of family, nature, and shelter emerged. An abstract combination of circular and pointed shapes represent these three themes in a thoughtful, uplifting way.
The Transformation
The mural’s design was largely inspired by discussions and feedback from children and therapists within The CAC’s network. The largest portion of the mural spans roughly 40 ft wide and nine feet tall to serve as a big, bold and impactful backdrop for The CAC’s private playground.
The thoughtful combination of shape and color creates an illusion that the mural stretches beyond the flat walls. Thirty-seven painted icons extend from both sides of the main mural, lining the walls which surround the playground at roughly 106 ft wide by 2.5 ft tall.
“Yellow is a bright happy color. It makes me think of daisies, which give me a joyful vibe.”
