EL DORADO MIDDLE SCHOOL

BAY AREA CHAPTER — Concord, CA

Big Picture

El Dorado Middle School is a Title 1 School serving 842 students in the Mount Diablo School District of Concord, CA. Their school vision: “At El Dorado, the foundation of our school culture is our shared values: Safety, Respect, and Responsibility. Together, we can build a community centered on principles of equity and humanity that extend beyond our school's physical boundaries.”

Project Color Corps' goal was to reflect their interior goal of equity and humanity on the exterior of their building, greeting the students every day as they came to school.

A Conversation About Color

Project Color Corps engaged the entire El Dorado Middle School in color seminars. Through these interactive sessions, students explored the transformative power of color and its impact on emotions and well-being. To further understand their aspirations for the school community, the project team administered surveys asking students how they wanted to feel upon entering the school building. Students shared their favorite colors, the emotions these colors evoked, and their desired emotional state when arriving at school.

The Transformation

Jennifer Morla merged the color seminar and community survey outcomes with meaningful imagery and symbolism that intentionally embraces themes of nature and community to foster a sense of belonging and a welcoming ethos for all members of the community.

After assessing the feedback from the El Dorado community, two palettes emerged: COMFORTABLE FRIENDS and SMART ENERGIZED.

The students were excited to see their ideas come to life and after the vote, the winning palette was SMART ENERGIZED.

El Dorado hosted a school beautification day centered around our Project Color Corps Volunteer Paint Day and 50+ volunteers gathered to bring the design to life.
