RUBY’S PLACE
BAY AREA CHAPTER — Hayward, CA
Big Picture
Ruby’s Place is an innovative nonprofit committed to providing safety and support to survivors and victims of interpersonal violence through hope, advocacy, and connection. The program ensures survivors have a safe place for their families and an opportunity to reach self-sufficiency.
Project Color Corps was honored to support Ruby’s Place with exterior artwork co-designed with AP+I Design. Celebrating the color and abundance of fresh fruit, the design is bright and graphically vibrant and the color palette continues from walls to fencing with a rainbow of stripes. The graphics bring a little “Apricot City” history to their walls.
A Conversation About Color
Laura hosted an intimate color seminar with the staff at Ruby’s Place where they learned about the transformational power of color. Their feedback and desires were insightful and represented the needs of the residents. Ultimately, they wanted residents to feel invited and evoke joy, contentment, and calm.
The Transformation
AP+I designed a creative mural that adds a sense of history to the facility.
They learned that the area used to be called “The Heart of the Garden of Eden” because of its temperate climate and fertile soil. In the 50s, Hayward became “Apricot City”, home to Hunt’s Cannery of the stone fruit. This reference inspired the concept of a garden featuring the delicate fruits.
Two palettes were created, PRICELESS LIGHT and TRANSFORMATIVE PEACE. The winning color scheme was PRICELESS LIGHT.
